When I was a little girl, my great-grandmother taught me a simple philosophy of life: “When you do something good, good things will happen to you in return.”
Once I believed this strongly before graduating from university and entering the professional world.
After too many unfair and cruel competitions, I thought I would never believe this saying again, but recently my mindset has changed.
A few days ago, a former colleague asked me if I could teach a bunch of retired ladies to practice yoga because she knew I was an experienced yoga practitioner and instructor.
I thought it was a charity event to celebrate Women’s Day, so I said yes without hesitation.
It turned out to be a series of classes to instruct those elder ladies from 0 to 1. What’s more, the age range of those yoga beginners was roughly 50 to 70. Last week, I needed to spend almost all of my spare time studying the physiology of older women and rearranging the content based on my studies.
And now, my great-grandmother’s words have come back to me.
After the first class last weekend, I found this special yoga teaching has given me something good back.
Those ladies are the most serious and quick learners I’ve ever met. They not only gave me a sense of accomplishment but also made me start to think about what I want to do in retirement when I get old – I’ve never thought about this seriously before.
Follow-up 1: More Benefits from My Charity Yoga Classes
A few days ago, I wrote about the yoga classes I’m teaching to senior ladies. If you haven’t read it yet, you can find it here.
Now I’m receiving more benefits from this charity activity.
This course is part of a government-led public-private project, so one of the benefits is that the government offers me a free course on elder education. This course includes geriatric education and information about the psychology of aging. When I finish that program, I’ll get a certificate from a local education department.
The course itself is a benefit for me. Even better, all of this new knowledge is very useful for my main job.
What a wonderful thing!
I’m gonna try harder to teach those ladies.
